‘Centurion’ is a swords & sandal epic based on the legend of the Ninth Legion. The Ninth Legion was formed by the Romans in 65 BC & fought in many campaigns, however legend has it that it was the most fearsome fighting unit in the Roman Army & their entire legion comprising of over 4,000 men was presumed lost in their fight against the Picts (Scottish tribes).
‘Centurion’ is directed by Neil Marshall who in the past has given such fare as ‘Dog Soldiers’, ‘The Descent’ & ‘Doomsday’, so with two good movies out of three I’d say this one has a decent chance of turning out well & the movie surely looks the epic it promises to be.
This year ‘Centurion’ isn’t the only movie dealing with the tale of the Ninth Legion, Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play) is also directing a movie called ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’ which also tries to explain the mystery behind their sudden disappearance. In the past the Colin Firth – Aishwariya Rai starrer ‘The Last Legion’ also had elements from the tale of the Ninth Legion.
‘Centurion’ stars Dominic West, Michael Fassbender & Olga Kurylenko. It’ll release in the U.K. on the 23rd of April 2010.
