Tron when released in 1982 had some pretty groundbreaking special effects & some of the sequences like the light-cycle races were phenomenal for their time. Now 18 years later a sequel, Tron Legacy is finally being released (though a computer game sequel called ‘TRON 2.0’ had been released in 2003).
The original involved the character Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) being pulled inside a computer world where everything is one big game arena & the players are under constant threat of being wiped out. Of course I’m cutting down the tale in too far a simplistic manner but the game arena was the main attraction of the first movie. The second movie retains Kevin Flynn’s character who’s been living in the cyber world for the part 25 years & is slowly beginning to see new problems arising in the now exceedingly dangerous electronic arena. He’s joined by his now grown up son for this new adventure.
The teaser trailer shows a new-age light cycle chase & nothing of the plot. But the chase looks satisfactory enough though nothing to blow your socks off.
Jeff ‘The Dude’ Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn & Michael Sheen plays the villain of the piece. Garrett Hedlund (Troy, Four Brothers, and Death Sentence) stars as Sam Flynn, Kevin’s son. John Hurt is part of the cast as well.
The movie shall be released in IMAX 3D & Disney Digital 3-D on the 17th of December 2010.
*Update* A new rather subdued trailer for the movie is out. It has a lot more of the plot being shown plus there’s a quick shot of a ‘light-car’ & many other beautiful looking imagery from the virtual world. Watch it & decide for yourself.
