Watch the new trailer for The Karate Kid remake.

It’s been 25 years since the first Karate Kid movie & it became so wildly popular that it spawned three sequels & inspired numerous wannabes. So finally it too goes under the hammer to get the ‘remake’ treatment.

The movie’s set in China this time around with Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith taking up the titular role played by Ralph Macchio in the original & Jackie Chan playing his mentor Mr. Miyagi which was so memorably essayed by Pat Morita.

It’s good to see Jackie play something around his age though having watched Jaden Smith’s awful performance in ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ I don’t expect much from him.

The trailer looks fine & it will probably bring a much needed dose of 80s style inspirational-sports flick formula to the new age. The one thing that does worry me is that it’s directed by Harald Zwart who previously helmed bombs such as ‘The Pink Panther 2’, ‘One Night at McCools’ & the horrendous ‘Agent Cody Banks’.

The movie releases on the 11th of June 2010 in the U.S.

*Update* The new trailer for ‘The Karate Kid’ actually makes me pose a question, which is if the kid is learning Kung-Fu in this one instead of Karate why is it still called the Karate Kid? Shouldn’t it be called ‘The Kung-Fu Kid’? The trailer is nice & after a long time Jackie Chan seems watchable, though Jaden Smith acts just like a Mini-Will Smith.
