The first trailer for Tekken is out!

I’ve spent hours playing Tekken on various consoles & most memorably smashing away furiously at the buttons at a gaming arcade while trying to master the entire set of special moves. The Tekken series of games along with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat & Dead or Alive franchises is one of the most iconic video games of the fighting genre. So after the disasters of the latter three I expect very little from Tekken especially considering it’s directed by the guy who gave us Free Willy 2 & Anacondas 2. I am aware of the earlier animated movie which came out in 1997 but in spite of having it in my collection have never come around to watching it, maybe I will do that soon.

The plot which takes place in the future when most world governments have been replaced by corporations which hold a martial arts tournament called Iron Fist or Tekken (the Japanese word for Iron Fist) as entertainment for the disgruntled masses.

The trailer gives us a lot of character shots & I have to say they have shown respect for the styling & look of the characters while transferring them to the big screen. The teaser also provides the usual cheesiness that comes with these sorts of movies but there is not a single wow moment yet & there is no way I’m going to be pumped about the movie unless I see at least one cool fight clip.

The movie stars Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat) as Heihachi plus there’s Luke Goss (Blade II, Hellboy II) as British boxer Steve Fox. The movie is directed by Dwight H. Little. It releases in the U.S. sometime in 2010 (exact date is still undecided).
