Watch the trailer for Shahrukh Khan & Karan Johar's latest.
Shahrukh Khan raised quite a storm a few months back when he was detained for questioning at an American airport & all supposedly because his last name was Khan. I don’t know if it was a publicity stunt or a genuine grouse but every tom, dick & harry had their say on the matter. But watching the trailer now, I’m sure those less informed on matters would take the images as something that might have actually happened to Mr. Khan which adds credence to the ‘publicity stunt’ angle of things.
Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan) is a man afflicted with autism living in the U.S. who marries a single mother Mandira (Kajol) & life seems to be moving along fine for them until the terrorist attacks of 9/11 occur. Rizwan & his family face racism & he also gets picked up for questioning by the authorities all due to his religion, color of the skin & his last name being Khan (blah!). The nasty ordeal with the authorities leaves an impression on him such that he begins a journey across America to speak with the President & tell him that being a Muslim (& having Khan as your last name) doesn’t equate to being a terrorist.
I can’t really comment on more than what I saw in the trailer but Shahrukh Khan in “Rain Man” mode looks like…..well like a little jerkier version of himself. The journey also looks to cover events like Hurricane Katrina, if I got the flooding part right from the trailer. Parts like the kid taking blows from a football during a match & the whole white kid shrugging off Indian kid part seem unnecessary cinematic exaggerations, I hope they don’t go overboard in sensationalizing matters & turn every American into a racist just to get the audience all riled up.
The movie releases on the 12th of February & is directed by Karan Johar.
